Become a good writer needs practice, and you write a lot to get good command over the language. But if you don’t want to write more and don’t want to spend much time practicing to sharpen your writing skills. Nowadays, most people want to write a lot of emails, social media posts updating their profiles and biodata and message to colleagues and friends. So definitely your writings must be crisp and readable. But, who will check your essays continuously and offering suggestions and corrections? After installing the Grammarly extension, Grammarly icon will be displayed on your browser and whenever you type something you may notice that the icon is set near to your writing and is analyzing your writings. You need to create a free account in Grammarly using your email ID. You’ve got access to Grammarly’s dashboard.
In this dashboard, you can manage your account settings and documents. You can upgrade your account or cancel your Premium subscription, change the email address, set a new password for your account, delete your old documents and upload new ones for checking. To work with a new document click the New button. If you want to check an existing document on your computer, click Upload. If you’ve started editing, you can upload another document for checking.
Editing Your Writings
Grammarly automatically checks everything as you type; this makes it easy to spot and fix errors. While checking your document, the Assistant icon moves in a circle, which indicates that checking is in progress. As you type, Grammarly will continue monitoring your documents. You may notice a red or yellow (only in Premium version) underlines below some texts. That means some errors in your typing. Click on the underlined word to see Grammarly’s suggestions for that text. You can correct by clicking the suggested text, if you don’t want a suggestion, click the trash can icon to dismiss the suggestion.
Suggestions and Corrections
If you noticed that the suggestion is incorrect, click the flag icon and choose your preferred option to proceed. Sometimes some technical terms or some locations names you want to enter in your text, but not be in the dictionary. You may get a red colour warning. Then you can ask Grammarly to stop flagging that particular spelling as incorrect; instead, you can add that word in your personal dictionary by clicking the book icon. Here I intentionally made some errors in the below text to show how the error correction system works. You can see the critical error in red underline and it’s correction with an explanation.
Do you want to see the detailed explanation about a suggestion? Click the three dots at the bottom of the alert. You need to adjust checking to a particular document type to get the correct corrections. To do this, select your preferred domain like Academic, Business, Technical, Creative, and Casual in Set Goals > Domain.
Now to adjust the Preference settings, open any document and click the gear symbol in the lower-left corner of the page. In the window that opens next, toggle the switch next to your preferred setting to enable or disable it. After the editing, you can copy the text to the clipboard or download the document to your computer.
To know the document statistics, click Correct with Assistant and selecting the Performance option. You can see the text score, word count readability, and vocabulary. You can download the PDF report by going to the Performance and select Download PDF Report on the pop-up menu.
You can check your document for plagiarism if you have a Premium subscription, just by clicking the Plagiarism option in the lower right corner.
The free version offers critical grammar and spelling checks. The premium version offers advanced checks for punctuation, grammar, context, and sentence structure, vocabulary enhancement and suggestions, genre-specific writing style checks, and plagiarism detector.
